Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
