The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, evoking a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
