The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states the AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a club executive or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Season and European Arrival

That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his country to the title and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to control his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's frequently teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the senior top prize in the future.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
