Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
