Igor Jesus Scores Twice as The Reds Conclude Europa League Campaign with Victory over Hungarian Opponents

Igor Jesus celebrating
Igor Jesus has now notched eleven strikes in every tournament for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were previously qualified to the play-offs.
  • Bence Otvos own goal gives hosts a first-half lead.
  • Igor Jesus' European strike puts Forest in command.
  • Forward adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • James McAtee caps a great performance with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a place in the next qualifying round and entered this game with a slim possibility of reaching the top eight, even though they needed several results to fall in their favor.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured display will give Forest fans confidence that their team can come through the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the post with a headed effort inside the first 10 minutes for the visitors – who are managed by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

Forest broke the deadlock in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by the defender and added a second shortly after – the striker firing an effort in at the back post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he made a perfectly-timed run to break clear of the defence and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike ended Ferencvaros' aspirations of making a comeback and instead the hosts added a fourth when the impressive McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a infringement by the unfortunate Bence Otvos inside the box on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off draw is scheduled on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Nottingham Forest might face either Fenerbahce or Panathinaikos.

"It's more than the result, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the whole squad," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another stride forward, but it is a positive step."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as New Signing Observes from Stands

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in European competition this season with half of his 11 goals coming in the tournament.

This double also means he has got three goals in his last two games and the prospect of a challenge for his position in the forward line could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was recently brought in temporarily and he was watching this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, producing two excellent goals and overall being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not alone in impressing, with McAtee turning in his best performance in a Forest jersey since joining from the champions last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the bottom three when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a response," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan was incredibly lively. Jesus got another couple and these are good signs."
