Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and presented the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

The Reason for Division

With an extensive roster, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the individual narratives before branching into three distinct groups: Fighters, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might look unsuited, but the actions of the latest installment demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group understands precisely where to proceed after a violent initial meeting with the enemy group.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose passing started the campaign’s events—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each member has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the companion and best friend, seeks retribution.
  • The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and advises that it is a nasty environment.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as key figures in House Halovar could help the group access areas they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer defied the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them no alternative but to travel to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to round up the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can anticipate discovering which adventurers will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
