Arsenal's manager has expressed confidence that his squad can keep managing with injury setbacks after disclosing that star striker Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

The German forward has been out since August following knee surgery. Originally slated to come back sooner, Arteta revealed the player hit a snag when advancing his training and could not progress “to the next level.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This development leaves a selection headache for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or bringing back Viktor Gyökeres, who came back off the bench as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is in contention after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns affect defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. As a result, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to continue in central defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta believes the substantial investment on new players during the summer has left Arsenal in a more robust situation to handle such absences.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their championship push, the manager agreed. “Absolutely, because this season has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they must be capable to perform various functions if we want to compete at the top. And the instance of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the delay previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta provided additional context. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”

Arteta expressed his keenness to see him return. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, it’s a player that, for me, I admire greatly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his character, his nature. I see him suffer on the sidelines.”

“His fitness history is phenomenal, he's usually fit, and I am eagerly awaiting to get him back with the squad on the pitch because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
